Liposuction and BBL in Türkiye: what UK patients ask before they book

Liposuction and Brazilian butt lift in Türkiye: how long to stay in Antalya, flying home, compression garments, BBL safety, sitting and NHS aftercare.

Liposuction is one of the most requested cosmetic operations in Türkiye, and a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) – which uses fat from liposuction to reshape the buttocks – is often booked alongside it. This guide answers the practical questions UK patients ask most before they book: whether liposuction helps you lose weight, how long to stay in Antalya, when you can fly, garments and sitting, BBL safety and what happens if something goes wrong at home. It does not replace advice from your surgeon or GP.

Is liposuction a way to lose weight?

No. The NHS is clear that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. It removes pockets of fat that have not shifted with diet and exercise – typically the tummy, flanks, thighs, arms, chin or bottom – and BAPRAS says it is most effective in people who are near a normal weight with firm, elastic skin.

It also does not remove cellulite or stretch marks, and it will not tighten loose skin. If your skin is already lax, for example after major weight loss or pregnancy, liposuction alone can leave it looser; a skin-tightening operation may suit you better.

How much fat can be removed in one session – who decides?

Your surgeon does, after examining you – there is no single number that is right for everyone. It depends on your weight, general health, how many areas are treated and whether other procedures are combined. Larger volumes mean a longer operation, more fluid shifts in the body and more pain and bruising afterwards; the NHS lists fluid in the lungs and blood clots among the risks of liposuction.

Be cautious of anyone who promises a fixed amount of fat or a set number of litres before seeing you. A good surgeon will tell you what is safe in one session and, if you want more, suggest a second stage months later.

How many days do I need in Antalya?

For liposuction, BAPRAS advises allowing five to seven days abroad before flying home. After large-volume liposuction, several areas or a BBL, plan for longer and keep your return flight flexible.

Phase What usually happens
Arrival and day before surgery Consultation, examination, blood tests, marking, final plan
Surgery day Operation of around one to three hours; many people stay one night
Days 2–5 Rest at the hotel, short walks, garment and wound checks
Final check Surgeon confirms you are fit to fly and gives you your documents

BAPRAS reminds patients that cosmetic surgery is not a holiday. If you want to see Antalya, do it before the operation, not after.

Tip: Book a ticket you can change. If your surgeon wants to see you one more day, you do not want to be choosing between a check-up and a non-refundable flight.

When can I fly home – what about blood clots?

Only once your surgeon has seen you and agreed that you are fit to fly. BAPRAS warns that both major surgery and flying increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism, and that combining them shortly after an operation adds to that risk. Clots can start forming during the operation itself.

Before you fly, ask:

  • Do I need blood-thinning injections, for how long, and can I have a letter to carry them in hand luggage?
  • Should I wear compression stockings on top of my garment?
  • After a BBL, how should I sit on the plane – and is a special cushion advised?

During the flight, drink water, avoid alcohol and walk the aisle when you can. More detail in flying after cosmetic surgery.

How long must I wear compression garments?

Usually for several weeks. BAPRAS says the garment is worn day and night (taking it off only to shower) for at least two weeks, then for another four to six weeks. Your surgeon may adjust this.

Pack or buy at least two garments so one can be washed. Expect swelling and bruising; the NHS says it can take up to six months to settle, so your final shape is not visible straight away.

When Typical guidance (NHS / BAPRAS)
First two weeks Garment day and night, gentle walking, no strenuous activity
Three to four weeks Most people back to usual routines; gentle exercise
10 to 12 weeks Strenuous activity only after checking with your surgeon
Up to six months Remaining swelling settles, final result appears

Time off work depends on your job and how much was treated. BAPRAS says small areas may need only a day or two; extensive liposuction needs longer.

What is a BBL and why is it considered risky?

A BBL is a fat transfer: fat is removed by liposuction, processed and injected into the buttocks. Its main danger is rare but serious – if fat is injected into or under the buttock muscle, it can enter large veins and travel to the lungs (a fat embolism), which can be fatal.

Because of reported deaths, BAAPS advised its members in October 2018 not to perform BBLs until safety improved. In its 2022 review, BAAPS concluded that newer data put the risk of death nearer 1 in 15,000 when fat is placed only in the layer under the skin – similar to a tummy tuck – and issued safety recommendations, including:

  • inject fat only under the skin (subcutaneous), never into the muscle
  • use ultrasound during the operation to confirm where the cannula is
  • do not inject more fat than the area can safely hold; stage the procedure if needed
  • limit the surgeon to a maximum of three BBLs a day
  • allow at least two weeks to think after the first consultation, with a second consultation before surgery
  • no smoking for four weeks before and after surgery

Tip: Ask directly: “Will you inject only under the skin, and will you use ultrasound to check?” A clear yes, and an explanation of how, is what you are looking for.

How long can’t I sit after a BBL?

BAAPS recommends keeping pressure off the grafted area for the first two weeks. In practice that means lying on your front or side and avoiding sitting directly on your bottom, which also affects the flight home, taxis and returning to a desk job. Ask your surgeon what they allow and whether a cushion that takes pressure off the buttocks is advised.

Some of the transferred fat does not survive, so the final size usually settles over the following months.

Will results last if I gain weight?

Results are generally long-lasting, according to the NHS, as long as you maintain a healthy weight. Liposuction removes fat cells from the treated area, but the fat cells that remain – there and elsewhere – can still grow if you gain weight. Significant weight gain can change your shape in ways that look uneven. Transferred fat in a BBL also changes with your weight.

What are the main risks?

The NHS and BAPRAS list:

  • Common: pain, bruising, swelling, stiffness, numbness and a lumpy or uneven contour as the fat settles
  • Less common: fluid collecting under the skin (seroma), bleeding (haematoma), infection, skin colour changes
  • Rare but serious: blood clots in the legs or lungs, fluid in the lungs, damage to internal organs and, with a BBL, fat embolism

Some people need a second operation to correct irregularities. No surgeon can guarantee a result.

What if I get lumps, seromas or problems back home – will the NHS help?

The NHS will always treat emergencies. But after private surgery abroad, less serious complications and corrective surgery are often not provided, and your GP is not obliged to provide aftercare for surgery done privately. Agree before you travel:

  • Who reviews you if a lump, fluid or swelling appears after you are home?
  • Can the clinic see photos or hold a video call, and how quickly will they reply?
  • If fluid needs draining or a revision is needed, who pays and where is it done?

When to get help:

  • Call 999 or go to A&E: shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing blood, heavy bleeding, confusion or fainting.
  • Contact your GP or NHS 111 the same day: a temperature of 38°C or above, spreading redness, pus or a bad smell from a wound, a painful or swollen calf, or swelling that suddenly gets worse.

See warning signs after surgery and complications after surgery abroad and the NHS.

Can I go in the sea or sunbathe in Antalya?

Not straight after surgery. BAPRAS advises against swimming, sunbathing, alcohol and water sports during recovery. Wait until your wounds have fully healed before swimming, and keep bruised skin and small scars out of strong sun.

How do I check the surgeon and clinic?

The UK Foreign Office says it is aware of seven British nationals who died in Türkiye in 2025 after medical procedures, and advises talking to your UK doctor and doing your own research. Before you book, check: For context: with around 1.4 million health tourists a year (USHAŞ, 2025), this is a small number, and no death rate can be worked out from it – see Is surgery in Türkiye safe?.

  1. Who exactly will operate, and are they a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery?
  2. Does the facility hold a Ministry of Health health tourism authorisation? The Ministry lists approved providers on the HealthTürkiye website.
  3. How many liposuction operations and BBLs does the surgeon do each year?
  4. For a BBL: subcutaneous injection only, ultrasound guidance, how many cases a day?
  5. What blood-clot prevention do I get, and is there an intensive care unit on site?
  6. Who handles complications once I am home, and is that in writing?

Warning signs include a package booked without a medical consultation, no questions about your health or weight, pressure to decide quickly, very large volumes promised before you are examined, and “guaranteed” results. See our checklist for choosing a reputable clinic.

What is usually in the package – and what documents should I bring home?

Packages commonly include the operation, hospital stay, hotel, airport transfers and a first garment. Check in writing whether blood tests, extra garments, blood-thinning injections, follow-up checks and revisions are included.

Before you leave, make sure you have:

  • an operation report in English naming the procedures, areas, volumes and surgeon
  • a discharge letter listing medicines, doses and how long to take them
  • a letter for injectable medicines in hand luggage
  • written instructions for garments, wound care and sitting (after a BBL)
  • contact details for the surgeon after you leave
  • your contract and invoices

Give a copy to your GP practice so they know exactly what was done.

Frequently asked questions

Is liposuction a way to lose weight?

No. The NHS states that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. It removes fat from areas that do not respond to diet and exercise, and works best in people who are not overweight.

How long do I need to stay in Antalya for liposuction?

BAPRAS advises allowing five to seven days after liposuction before flying home. After larger-volume liposuction or a BBL, many surgeons ask you to stay longer. Your surgeon should check you before you fly.

How long do I have to wear a compression garment after liposuction?

BAPRAS says day and night (except for showering) for at least two weeks, then for a further four to six weeks. Your surgeon may give you a different plan.

Is a Brazilian butt lift dangerous?

It has a rare but serious risk: fat entering the bloodstream and travelling to the lungs (fat embolism), which can be fatal. A 2022 BAAPS review estimates the risk of death nearer 1 in 15,000 when fat is injected only under the skin, similar to a tummy tuck, but deep injection into the muscle is much more dangerous.

How long can I not sit after a BBL?

BAAPS recommends keeping pressure off the grafted area for the first two weeks. Ask your surgeon how this applies to the flight home and to sitting on a cushion.

Will the fat come back if I put on weight?

Results are generally long-lasting if your weight stays stable. If you gain weight, the remaining fat cells can still grow, including in untreated areas.

Will the NHS treat complications after liposuction abroad?

The NHS will treat emergencies. Less serious problems and corrective surgery after private surgery abroad are often not provided, so agree aftercare with the clinic before you travel.

How do I check a clinic in Türkiye?

Check that the surgeon is a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery and that the facility holds a Ministry of Health health tourism authorisation. The Ministry publishes approved providers on the HealthTürkiye website.
